2025 Shooting Goals

By Corey Young

Setting measurable and attainable goals is a well-known helpful technique that can be used in all areas of life. Whether your goals are physical, spiritual, or professional in nature; goals focus our time and energy in critical areas to accelerate the pace of change.

Last year I proposed a few collective goals to challenge us to grow and improve as shooters, competitors and friends. As a reminder, those goals were:

  1. Concealed Carry Challenge
  2. Try Something New or Different
  3. Have Fun
  4. Expand Your Squad
  5. Be a Good Ambassador

Did you accomplish them? I did and I leaned a lot in the processes. I even broke a critical component on my everyday carry gun during a race; causing me to reevaluate if that was a good choice for a defensive firearm. If you didn’t, no worries. Go back and read last year’s article to learn more about those goals and try to achieve them this year.

I’d like to propose the following goals for 2025:

  1. Shoot More

In 2024 I shot just over 9,000 rounds! My goal for 2025 will be to shoot over 10,000 rounds. While not everyone has the ability to shoot at that volume, push yourself to train more. The key though is to make those rounds meaningful. It’s ok to have fun, just make sure you know when you’re having fun, and when you’re actually doing meaningful training. Either way, make those rounds count and put some lead downrange.

  1. Take a Class

Identify an area for improvement, find a reputable instructor, and take a class to push yourself to improve. There are all kinds of classes for every area of this sport, long range, shotgun, pistol, even medical. Pick one, schedule it and accelerate your growth.

  1. Have MORE Fun

This is a bit of a carryover from last year, but having fun is important. This is true in all aspects of life from shooting, to relationships, to work/life balance. If you’re not having fun, make a change. Making time for fun will ensure you don’t get burnt out.

  1. Reconnect with Your Squad

Last year we focused on meeting new people and growing your “squad”. This year, let’s strengthen those new friendships while we reconnect with old friends too. Reach out, invite them to shoot, or for dinner, maybe drinks at the bar. Friendships get stale and life’s short so don’t wait too long!

  1. Be a Good Ambassador

This is a carryover from last year but rule #1 always applies; Don’t be a Jerk! Be a friendly and welcoming ambassador for the sport and for a responsibly armed population.

Just like last year, several of these can be accomplished simultaneously. For example, completing a higher round count class can check off goals 1 and 2 at the same time. How many can you accomplish this year?

Happy New Year! Be safe, have fun and go train.
